The intercharge network conference again demonstrated this year how close E-mobility, energy supply and sustainability are meanwhile connected to each other.

Our colleague Asmelash Dagne took part in an expert panel at icnc26 in Berlin on the topic:

“Charging Ahead: The East African EV Opportunity and What It Will Take to Realise It”

The discussion centred on the potential offered by electric mobility in East Africa – and the technical, economic and infrastructural conditions that need to be put in place to ensure this potential can actually be realised.

The main focus was on what is actually happening in the region at present: from growing EV usage and the expansion of the charging infrastructure to questions about how energy supply, investment, interoperability and partnerships can keep pace with this development.

For us at EcoPhi, the following aspects are particularly important:

reliable and scalable charging infrastructure

renewable energy supply

PV and BESS for charging applications

smart energy management

grid capacities and local supply conditions

economically viable charging and business models

Particularly in markets with rapidly growing energy demand and, in some cases, limited grid infrastructure, charging infrastructure cannot be viewed in isolation. The key lies in the interplay between charging points, local generation, storage, the grid and flexible consumers.

For EcoPhi, it is precisely this connection that is particularly relevant: an EMS can help to provide transparency on available energy, coordinate various system components and integrate charging infrastructure effectively into the local energy system.

Many thanks to you, Asmelash, and also to the other panellists Puya Neda, Francis Romano, Paul Wambugu, Michael Schuster and Mikkel Becker-Aakervik, as well as the organisers of icnc26 for the fascinating discussion on stage and the many conversations we had at the event!

Photos by Oliver Kopsch

As part of the dena Renewable Energy Solutions (RES) programme in South Africa, project activities focusing on energy system integration and practical EMS applications have been successfully concluded. The programme supports the deployment of sustainable and reliable energy solutions in markets facing structural grid challenges and evolving regulatory frameworks.

Within this context, the focus was on energy management approaches that enable stable operation under variable grid conditions, including decentralised generation, battery storage and fluctuating supply scenarios. In particular, the South African market highlights the importance of flexible control strategies, transparent system monitoring and adaptable EMS architectures.

The completion of the dena RES activities underlines the relevance of configurable and manufacturer-independent energy management systems for emerging and dynamic energy markets. Insights gained during the programme contribute to the continued development of practical EMS concepts that can be transferred to comparable market environments.

From 11 to 13 March 2025, Solar Solutions Amsterdam brought together renewable energy professionals at Expo Greater Amsterdam to discuss and demonstrate the latest industry developments in solar technology, storage, smart energy systems and related solutions.

At the event, our focus was on energy monitoring and energy management, particularly in the context of self-consumption optimisation and integration with dynamic electricity pricing. The discussions highlighted practical challenges in managing photovoltaic generation, load profiles and storage in environments where tariff signals and consumption patterns vary throughout the day. Clear and reliable energy monitoring is a prerequisite for informed decision-making and effective control strategies, while enhanced EMS functionality supports optimisation of on-site energy flows under variable pricing conditions.

Engagement with installers, system integrators and technical decision-makers at Solar Solutions Amsterdam underlined the growing relevance of EMS solutions that combine high-resolution data acquisition with flexible control logic. In many cases, this includes the ability to incorporate dynamic tariffs into automated optimisation strategies for self-consumption and storage dispatch, enabling more efficient use of locally generated energy and alignment with market price signals.

The EcoPhi platform has been fully redesigned and restructured. This release represents a fundamental architectural update rather than an incremental iteration, with the goal of improving usability, extensibility and long-term scalability across diverse energy system environments.

A key focus of the new platform is improved visualisation, navigation and user guidance. Data views, system states and control options have been reworked to provide clearer context and reduce complexity for users managing heterogeneous energy systems. The revised navigation structure supports faster access to relevant functions and a more consistent workflow across monitoring, analysis and control features.

From a technical perspective, the new platform establishes a solid foundation for manufacturer-independent integration of components. Devices such as inverters, battery systems, meters and controllers can be connected in a flexible and consistent way, independent of vendor-specific implementations. This enables the platform to support mixed system architectures while maintaining a unified EMS logic.

The underlying modular platform structure allows new features and functional modules to be added more efficiently than before. This applies both to internal platform development and to the integration of additional system capabilities over time. As a result, new use cases, control strategies and extensions can be introduced with significantly reduced implementation effort.

In parallel, the platform offers expanded configuration options for users, enabling more precise adaptation to site-specific requirements, operating conditions and project constraints. Users can adjust system behaviour and control parameters in a structured manner, supporting flexible deployment across different applications and markets.

With this release, the EcoPhi platform provides a modern and intuitive technical baseline for energy management applications that require adaptability, interoperability and long-term extensibility.

From 21–23 May 2024, Enlit Africa took place in Cape Town, South Africa, bringing together energy utilities, system integrators, technology providers and project stakeholders from across the African energy sector. The event focused on grid stability, decentralised energy systems and practical solutions for markets facing structural supply challenges.

At Enlit Africa 2024, we presented our energy management system (EMS) with a particular focus on its applicability to the South African energy market. Ongoing load shedding, increasing deployment of distributed generation and battery storage, and highly dynamic operating conditions require EMS solutions that go beyond fixed control strategies.

Discussions with industry professionals highlighted a strong demand for flexible and configurable EMS architectures that can adapt to changing grid conditions, site-specific requirements and evolving regulatory frameworks. Our approach, combining hardware and software with modular configuration and open interfaces, addresses these needs by enabling tailored control strategies for complex and volatile energy environments.

The insights gained during Enlit Africa 2024 underline the importance of adaptability and interoperability for energy management systems in dynamic markets and provide valuable input for the continued development of our EMS platform.
